Your Delhi University marksheet shows a CGPA, but the form in front of you asks for a percentage. That mismatch is why this page exists — the official formula, a ready conversion table, and the exact places students go wrong, all in one place.
The short answer: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. A CGPA of 8.0 becomes 76%, and 7.5 becomes 71.25%. Use the calculator above to try your own score, then read on for when the rule applies and how DU’s format differs from the general UGC formula.
The Official DU CGPA to Percentage Formula
The University of Delhi’s Examination Branch is widely cited for the conversion rule Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 — the same multiplier CBSE uses for Class 10 CGPA.
Why 9.5 and not 10? A CGPA of 10 needs marks of 90 and above in every course. Marks in the 90s average out to roughly 95, so the multiplier scales the grade points to the marks they represent. This is different from the general UGC formula used across most other Indian universities — see our CGPA to Percentage guide if your marksheet isn’t from DU.
3 Steps to Convert Your DU CGPA
- Take your final CGPA exactly as printed on your DU grade card or transcript — don’t round it yourself.
- Multiply it by 9.5.
- Keep two decimal places and write the result with a percent sign.
Quick check: a CGPA of 8.3 gives 8.3 × 9.5 = 78.85%. If your answer is higher than your CGPA × 10, you’ve made an error — the DU result should always sit below that line.

Worked Example: First-Semester SGPA at DU
Suppose a student’s first semester has six courses under the UGCF credit structure:
| Course | Grade | Points | Credits | Credits × Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DSC 1 | A+ | 9 | 4 | 36 |
| DSC 2 | A | 8 | 4 | 32 |
| DSC 3 | B+ | 7 | 4 | 28 |
| Generic Elective | A+ | 9 | 4 | 36 |
| AEC | O | 10 | 2 | 20 |
| SEC | A | 8 | 2 | 16 |
| Total | 20 | 168 |
SGPA = 168 ÷ 20 = 8.40. Percentage equivalent = 8.40 × 9.5 = 79.80%. Note this is not the plain average of the six grade points (which would be 8.5) — credits matter, and a 4-credit DSC paper moves your SGPA more than a 2-credit SEC paper.
Delhi University Grading System (10-Point Scale)
| Grade | Points | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| O | 10 | Outstanding |
| A+ | 9 | Excellent |
| A | 8 | Very Good |
| B+ | 7 | Good |
| B | 6 | Above Average |
| C | 5 | Average |
| P | 4 | Pass |
| F | 0 | Fail |
For the general 10-point UGC letter-grade scale used across most other Indian universities, see the table on our CGPA to Percentage page.
Degree Classification (Distinction, First, Second Division)
| Class | Percentage | CGPA (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Distinction | 75% and above | 7.89+ |
| First Division | 60% – 74.99% | 6.32 – 7.88 |
| Second Division | 50%/55% – 59.99% | 5.26/5.79 – 6.31 |
The Second Division lower bound varies between guides, and some departments apply stricter Honours conditions such as clearing all papers on the first attempt — check the ordinance for your own programme before quoting a class on a form.
CBCS vs UGCF: Does the Formula Change?
CBCS was the Choice Based Credit System used for earlier batches. UGCF 2022 is the four-year Undergraduate Curriculum Framework DU introduced under NEP 2020. Most calculators and guides continue to apply CGPA × 9.5 to both. A few online tools claim some colleges use CGPA × 10 for UGCF batches, but they don’t cite a DU circular — treat that claim with caution, and if the percentage goes on an important document, ask your college for the rule in writing.
SOL and NCWEB students follow the same 10-point scale and ×9.5 conversion, though verification requests may go through their own offices.
Does 10 CGPA Equal 100%?
No. Under the DU multiplier, a perfect 10 CGPA converts to 95%, not 100% — because 10 × 9.5 = 95. If a form asks for percentage and you write 100 because your CGPA is 10, a verification check will flag it as a mismatch with the transcript formula.
Common Mistakes With the DU Formula
- Using CGPA × 10, which overstates your percentage by about 5%
- Rounding the CGPA before converting instead of after
- Converting a single SGPA and calling it your final percentage
- Averaging SGPAs instead of weighting them by credits
- Writing 100% for a 10 CGPA when the DU maximum is 95%
- Using a formula from another university, such as VTU or a generic ×10 rule
DU CGPA to Percentage for Placements & PSU Eligibility
Campus recruiters commonly screen on percentage. 60% throughout graduation is a typical minimum, which means a CGPA of at least 6.32. Some employers raise the bar to 65% (6.84 CGPA) or 70% (7.37 CGPA). PSU recruitment via GATE often sits around 60% to 65%, and government posts list their own percentage rule in each notification — always read the current advertisement rather than relying on a general guide.
Converting for Study Abroad
Universities abroad usually read your transcript directly and apply their own equivalence, so a percentage is often optional. Evaluators such as World Education Services (WES) use their own credential evaluation methods rather than a self-made conversion — follow their instructions if your application requires one. If you need a US-style 4.0 GPA figure instead of a percentage, see our CGPA to GPA guide.
Getting an Official Conversion Certificate
Many employers accept your transcript plus the stated formula, but visas, credential evaluations and some government jobs may ask for a certificate. Contact your college office or the DU examination branch (or the SOL/NCWEB office, if applicable) with a written request stating your name, roll number, programme, batch and CGPA on record, along with copies of your marksheets — ask that the letter state the formula and the converted percentage.
FAQs
What is the DU CGPA to percentage formula?
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. For example, 8.0 CGPA equals 76%, and 7.5 CGPA equals 71.25%. This is the rule most DU guides and calculators use for Delhi University CGPA to percentage conversion.
What CGPA is 60% in Delhi University?
60% equals 6.32 CGPA (60 ÷ 9.5). Any CGPA at or above 6.32 clears a 60% requirement, the most common cutoff on placement and recruitment forms.
Does 10 CGPA mean 100% in DU?
No. A 10 CGPA converts to 95% because 10 × 9.5 = 95 — that’s the highest percentage this rule can produce.
Does the DU formula change for UGCF or NEP batches?
Most guides and calculators continue to use ×9.5 for UGCF 2022 batches. If the percentage will go on an important document, ask your college for the rule in writing.
Do SOL and NCWEB students use the same formula?
Yes, in most published guides. SOL and NCWEB students receive University of Delhi degrees and use the same 10-point grading scale and ×9.5 conversion, though verification requests may go through their own offices.
Why does my calculator result differ from another website?
The usual causes are a different formula, rounding the CGPA early, entering an SGPA instead of a CGPA, or averaging SGPAs without credit weights. Test any tool with 8.0 CGPA — the DU rule should return 76.00%.
